First off, yeah. It’s Dara Torres, not Dana Torres. My bad.
To refresh your memory, she is the 41 year-old superwoman of all swimmingness… who won a spot on this year’s U.S. Olympic Team to become the oldest woman to ever swim in the Olympics. Sha. Zam.
Anywho. In this post, I wrote her name as “Dana” because the article I linked to in that post gave her that name too. In the spirit of journalistic integrity, I feel I should correct my error. It’s Dara.
Dara. Dara. Dara. *** not unlike Jan Brady’s jealous whine, “Marsha. Marsha. Marsha.”***
My good friend Julie Leung sent me a link to an article in the NY Times about Dara Torres.
***crickets chirping***
***stunned***
***eye twitching***
Did you that picture?
The woman is a machine. And she has a staff that helps keep her primed. And she is 6 feet tall…
I have written a poem:
Why I Will Never Rock the Water Nor be an Olympian Like Dara…
I don’t have a head coach.
Nor a coach for sprinting.
Nor even a coach made of a pumpkin.
Neither like Dara, nor Cinderella am I.
No strength coach…
no stretcher-people neither.
Masseuse?
Schmasseuse!
2 Masseuses?
Double Schmasseuses!
I have no nanny.
I haven’t seen my chiropractor
since December.
$$$,$$$
No. Words.
I. Eat. Sugar.
Go. Dara. Go.
The end.

Keep up-to-date on the insane, the insightful, and the whatever…

She does rock..hve you seen her abs? Whoa.
You still rock, lovey!
Oh oh. Uh, I forgot to say DON’T look at the picture. Just don’t do it. And certainly don’t click to enlarge the image…as I did…
After reading that article I felt better about my own abs. Really. If - in order to look like Dara Torres - I have to have $100K in support and nine staff, and spend several hours of the day at it, then I don’t feel too bad about what I’m able to do with 45 minutes at 6 am and a pair of running shoes and a bit of discipline. :-)
Also, after reading that article, and reading between the lines, I realized I am glad I can take vacations and happy to be me, plodding-runner-at-home-middle-aged-mom-and-wife.
Dara’s life though does sound pretty amazing and exciting. And I certainly hope to see her swim again and root for her! She does inspire me with her determination, dedication and perseverance. And so I’ll keep that picture in my mind to motivate myself at 6 am when the alarm goes off…:-)
all that makes this 41 yr old feel like I now have a good excuse for myself! thanks!
Dara, Dana, no matter, *you* are still better than me. I eat sugar AND I don’t run nor bike ride.
P.S. I happen to like Dana better. ;)
I love love love your poem! You’re still better than me, too. I don’t do squat.
